First Presbyterian of Beaufort gets creative with 10thAnnual Nativity Celebration
As many of us look for new ways to celebrate the season and gather safely with friends and family, First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort’s 10thAnnual Nativity Celebration “Through the Glass” is hitting all the right notes.
2020 started out as a slap-bang year for catering. I had parties booked from January through December. Unfortunately, around the middle of March, like with most event businesses, Covid-19 started ruining lots of party plans. During the entire 33 years that Catering by Debbi Covington has been open, I've done all of the cooking. I don't have an on-site staff. However, I could never do what I do without the help of my “trusty sidekicks.”
We are days away from the 2020 finish line, our year of unprecedenteds. A year many of us will gladly turn our backs on while we anticipate the emergence of a Covid-19 vaccine. We are ready for a new year of The Whole Face. 2021 needs to be a year to yank off our masks and pitch them into the wind, a new year of unmuffled laughter and radiant smiles. 2020 was my year to be intentional but it is ending with my focus on a prefix - de.
When North Carolina-based lawyer and photographer extraordinaire Mike Lassiter approached us about writing introductions to the nine chapters of his new coffee table book, Our Vanishing Americana: A South Carolina Portrait, we jumped at the chance—especially after seeing his best-selling Our Vanishing Americana: A North Carolina Portrait, along with watching the accompanying PBS show about it. Once we dug in, it gave us great insight into many of the long-standing businesses and people of our adopted state and we never looked back.
In our last issue, I copped out and reran a four-year-old column. I’d written it right before the 2016 election, and was stunned by how well it'd held up. It felt very 2020, a God-send for yours truly, since I was in no mood to write.
Allen Patterson Builders, Habersham Land Company, and K. Lo Designs announce the completion and opening of a 2020 Southern Living Showcase Home. This new house plan is named “The Loudon,” and was built with innovative quality, functionality, and an elevated interior design featuring the iconic colors and textures of the Lowcountry.
At the risk of stating the obvious, I’m going out on a very short limb to say that the winter of 2020 is an altogether different experience than past holiday seasons. As much as we’d like for it not to be the case, the pandemic is still a reality and political divisiveness is still raging. In the midst of it all, I shout to the skies to bring on that holiday cheer!

On Thursday, December 3, at 6:00 p.m., the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will host a lively virtual conversation with southern storytellers Ron Rash and George Singleton and they read from and discuss their recently released story collections – In the Valley and You Want More. This free program will be moderated by Brooke McKinney, the Pat Conroy Literary Center's communications and events coordinator.
In her first-ever published book review in the Charleston Post and Courier, Pat Conroy Literary Center student intern Holland Perryman described the recently released novel Spellbound Under the Spanish Moss as “an action-packed narrative that feels like the retelling of a lucid dream. The Garretts’ first co-authored novel in a new series is reminiscent of children’s fairy tales in its directness, emphasis on moral lessons and its concision.... An auspicious beginning to a new Lowcountry adventure series.”
Yay for cooler weather with no humidity! Beaufort friends, we still have a few weeks before Thanksgiving, so let's celebrate a wee bounty of autumn comfort cuisine. The recipes this week are some of my favorite crisp weather contentment foods.
