For several years, Friends of Hunting Island members have been working on a way to “pay our privilege forward,” by bringing more underserved children to the state park. Covid-19 delayed the launch of the project, but now, with support from the Coastal Communities Foundation, Friends of Hunting Island will begin by bringing families to Hunting Island State Park through The People’s Park Project.
Entering its fifth year, March Forth is a signature annual program of the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center, commemorating the anniversary of Pat Conroy’s death (March 4, 2016) with educational conversations about storytelling, conservation, social justice, and inclusivity—major themes of Conroy’s writing and teaching life.
I have observed that during these isolating times; times where we spend a lot of our days and weeks at home, that the more time I have available to do something, the less likely I am to do it. Have y’all been afflicted with that particular malady, too?
In the past Facebook was to me a black hole that I could tumble into like Alice down the rabbit hole. I could log on for a peek at a particular page and not emerge until an hour or so later, overstimulated and curious as to where the time had disappeared. Sea turtles, lighthouses, campgrounds, school buses, whimsical characters, and Lowcountry scenes are just some of the images enjoyed by those who are lucky enough to discover one of Rick’s Rocks. Novelists Bren McClain and Jon Sealy in virtual conversation
On Wednesday, January 27, at 6:00 p.m., the Pat Conroy Literary Center will host a virtual conversation with fiction writers Bren McClain and Jon Sealy as they discuss South Carolina stories--what they are and aren't, and the challenge of writing stories that are timely and yet timeless. They will also read from their novels: Bren’s One Good Mama Bone and Jon’s The Merciful. This free program will be moderated by Brooke McKinney, the Conroy Center's communications and events coordinator.
