“Suppose you could gain everything in the whole world, and lost your soul. Was it worth it?” – Billy Graham
Justin Wilbur Johnson felt trapped. At thirty-seven, still a handsome dark haired construction worker with a gorgeous girlfriend, he had bought a modest yet cozy two room house in Beaufort, South Carolina. He often wore a Clemson sweatshirt to work. It featured a Tigers paw print front and center. He liked hoodies and the signature orange and grey colors. “Willy,” as his friends and co-workers called him, had never been to college but he liked the aura of college football and watched every game he could. His girlfriend Sally Hughes Jackson watched a quarter or two here and there, but only to humor her poor Willy, who could easily drain a six-pack of Heineken with a bag of Fritos over the course of a game. She wondered how he stayed so trim.

Jennifer Wenk started thinking about the holiday shopping season and how COVID-19 was going to affect her Bay Street business back in March.
S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster had just signed an executive order to close all bars and restaurants and many Beaufort business owners like Wenk, owner of Beaufort River Glass, feared they would be next.
The next show at the Beaufort Art Association (BAA) Gallery will feature the work of Lowcountry artist Susan McCarthy. The title of her show is “Isolation” and will run from Jan. 5 to Feb. 26, 2020. An artist’s reception will be held at the Gallery at 913 Bay Street in Beaufort on Friday, Jan. 8, from 5 – 8 pm.
McCarthy, who moved to Beaufort nine years ago, maintains a studio at Atelier on Bay. She says her interest in art really started when she was young and lived in Pennsylvania close to Chadds Ford, the winter home of Andrew Wyeth.
This January, Art League of Hilton Head showcases abstract art three ways in Abstract x 3, an exhibit of work by local artists Rose Cofield, Jennifer Rocco Stone and George Watson. Inspired by the use of bright colors and textures, women’s interior emotional landscapes, and the free-flowing shapes of blown glass and handmade pottery, the works by Cofield, Stone and Watson show three very distinctive points of view.
If you've been a long time Celebrate Every Day reader, you know that local photographer, Susan DeLoach, and I have collaborated on lots of things. We've joined forces on Lowcountry Weekly columns, weddings, parties, digital magazines, OLLI classes, and in 2019 we published a cookbook, Celebrate Beaufort, together. We've been good friends for close to 15 years.
Christmas is coming. There's no stopping it. If you haven't put your Christmas tree up yet, here's an idea. Why not host a tree-trimming supper? What a great way to spend time with family and/or friends and get your holiday decorating done at the same time! My menu has a Mexican theme. Whip up a batch of margaritas and let the festivities begin. Happy Christmas partying!
I don’t know how our editor, Margaret Evans, does it. I’ve only been doing this column for a couple of years, and I’m already starting to have shpilkes as time for another column approaches. I love those onomatopoetic words!
