Micah McLaurin will play a free youth concert at USCB
A recent study asked Americans if they had attended a live classical music concert within the last twelve months; 8.8% replied, “Yes.” I tremble to think what the percentage would have been if the question were asked only in rural South Carolina and only to Americans under 25.
There is reason to hope that the percentage will be higher than we might expect if the question is asked after March 25, 2018, when USCB is presenting Micah McLaurin to play Mozart, Chopin, Lady Gaga and others and to talk about being a classical pianist in 2018.

A new manner of fundraising will be held in an old venue when the Verdier House Museum introduces Southern Settings, a tablescaping which will bring regional and one international table-top designers together. For the record, I'm a carnivore – a meatasaurus, even. I'd grab a cold piece of steak out of the fridge way before digging into a bag of potato chips or eating a piece of chocolate. So, when director VW Scheich and his wife Uyen Le asked me to participate in their upcoming feature film, “Carpe Vegan,” I wasn't sure just what I had to offer.
The Hilton Head Christian Academy performing arts department takes us on a journey through the hills of Austria during WWII and over the mountains of Switzerland with a delightful production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music. The skilled performers are supported by a live orchestra, impressive set design and arduous choreography.

I tend to be an accidental gardener. If anything grows in my yard, it’s by pure serendipity. Somebody planted azaleas and camellias decades ago . . . Wisteria appears magically every year . . . A jack-o-lantern carved out back one fall becomes a small pumpkin patch the next summer . . . That sort of thing.
You’re likely familiar with the quote: “Music has charms to soothe a savage beast.” Shakespeare, right? Wrong! Fellow English poet and playwright William Congreve actually said that. But no matter, for nothing has changed in the ensuing years. There’s still no shortage of beasts to soothe, be they real or imagined. Though your chances of facing a fire-breathing dragon are slim, thank goodness, if a situation or emotion feels real, it’s definitely in the “beast” category. And music can be your knight in shining armor.
My husband gets upset with me because I don’t like to try new foods and won’t eat many of the dishes he loves. He loves liver, escargot, caviar, pate, and even kidneys and brains. No way will I let those things near my mouth.
