Independent Bookstore Day marks its fifth year of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide on Saturday, April 27th,with literary parties around the country.

NeverMore Books, 702 Craven Street, will be celebrating with local writers, illustrators, special discounts and giveaways.

I was driving to the Y the other day when a conversation on NPR caught my attention. The show was On Point, the interview was just starting, and I actually passed the Y and drove around Port Royal for a while, just listening, because I couldn’t believe my ears.

Hear these Beaufort poets and five other diverse South Carolina poets read at the launch of Archive: South Carolina Poetry Since 2005 on Saturday, April 27, from 5 pm at the Pat Conroy Literary Center. Published by Ninety-Six Press, Archive features 46 contributors, documenting the poetic life of the Palmetto State over the past 13 years.  This event is free and open to the public; copies of Archive will be available for sale and signing after the reading.

Ah, tomatoes. The delight and the bane of home gardeners everywhere. Especially here.  Down here in the Lowcountry, our soil is full of fungi, wilts and blights that decimate our ‘Brandywine’, ‘German Johnson’, ‘Mortgage Lifter’ and most other heirloom tomatoes.
