Artists of the Society of Bluffton Artists (SoBA) are creating original, one-of-a-kind handmade gifts for the 7th annual Holiday Boutique. The boutique is scheduled for December 7-21 at the gallery’s Center for Creative Arts building next door on Church Street in Old Town Bluffton.
The boutique offers the community a unique place to shop for the holidays from local artists with a variety of creative items to choose from — including Santa Clauses, jewelry, cards, holiday decorations, small paintings, floral arrangements and fiber art. Prices range from $15 to $350.
“It’s always a fun surprise to see the unique, creative things that people bring in,” said Lynda Hawley, SoBA’s fundraising chairwoman. “This gives the SoBA members the opportunity to display and sell other art pieces that normally wouldn’t be sold at the gallery. They really enjoy the challenge.”
The boutique opens from Dec. 7-21. The hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
"The Holiday Boutique is a destination for unique and original holiday gifts and home decor,” said Pam Davis, a SoBA member.
SoBA is the flourishing art hub in Bluffton’s historic District at the corner of Church and Calhoun streets. SoBA offers regular art classes, featured artist shows, exhibitions and more. Please visit www.sobagallery.com for a complete calendar of events and other information or call 843-757-6586.

Missy Gentile leads art classes referencing a quote from artist Helen Frankenthaler, “There are no rules. That is how art is born, how breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules. That is what invention is about.”
Four local jewelry designers will showcase their beaded works in Artful Adornment: Jewelry and Beyond, held at Art League Gallery this December. The show celebrates the variety and beauty found in beadwork, from Caroline Alderman's whimsical necklaces and Linda Raih's highly complex designs to Carol Romano Geraghty’s sculptural pieces and the architecture-inspired work of Nancy Apy.
Lowcountry Weekly is pleased to announce the winners of the 5th Annual Sea Island Spirit Writers Short Story Contest. Participation, like last year, was wonderful! The writers were asked to include the phrase "a skewed perspective" in a story limited to 750 words. The stories were judged by members of the Sea Island Spirit Writers, including Donna Armer, Katherine Tandy Brown, Deb Duer, Ginny Hall-Apicella, and Ellen Kelley. Thanks to everybody who entered a short story this year, and congratulations to the winners!
On November 9thsomething will happen in Beaufort that hasn’t happened in 20 years. When Director VW Scheich calls, “Action!” it will mark the first time a feature film has rolled in Beaufort since William Freidkin shot the mega-budget war drama Rules of Engagement here in 1999.
