I'm not sure what to say about this summer, except that it's been kind of . . . heavy. People keep dying. My father-in-law. A friend's mother. A couple of folks in my own generation, both with young children at home. I guess this is what happens when you hit middle age; people start shuffling off their mortal coils with alarming regularity. I have to say, it takes some getting used to.
I've barely been in Beaufort this summer. First, my father-in-law's passing in early June took us to California, then we were off to our annual family get-together in Myrtle Beach; and now, I'm writing from my parents' house on the banks of the Tennessee River, near Decatur, AL, where I grew up.
By Margaret Evans Y'all know I love me a good glass of wine, right? I believe I've mentioned that a time or two. And when I'm at a cocktail party, I want a cocktail. It adds sparkle to the occasion. Greases the conversation. Makes me feel charming. (You become quite charming, too, by the way!) I like to drink and I like people who like to drink.
Candice Glover won American Idol last night, and I'm sitting here thinking that it feels like the day after Christmas. You know the feeling. All that collective excitement, anticipation and good will finally culminated in a day of great joy, and you got just what you wanted, and so did everybody else . . . and now what? It's bittersweet. (Or, maybe that's just me. I seem to specialize in bittersweet.)
Every month, I visit with a few Bayview Manor residents on behalf of my church. For those of you in the Beaufort community unfamiliar with Bayview, it is a nursing home on Todd Drive, just off of Ribaut Road, and down Spanish Point Drive.
