I love the smell of college football in the air and Paul Finebaum blasting from my flat screen. Some people call it fall, but I call it football season as the golf season wanes into the Fed Ex Cup playoffs followed by the Ryder Cup. How does this fit into mindfulness and the alternative perspectives this column is known for, you may ask? There’s a time and a season for everything and everybody, isn’t there? Besides, the point of meditation or mindfulness is to find you in the everyday.

Travel with artist Thomas Hanlon on a Lowcountry Excursion this September at Art League Gallery. Hanlon began painting at age 12 with mentor Edwin Havas, AWS, and has continued to be a working artist for most of his career. Hanlon and his wife traveled the United States from 1989-2015 selling his works at festivals and fine art shows.
This exhibit stems from Hanlon’s childhood of going on Sunday family trips to anywhere and everywhere. Each newfound place became a new subject to paint. “There has always been joy for me in recognizing powerful compositions revealed in naturally occurring situations,” states Hanlon. Now a Lowcountry resident, Hanlon knows you do not have to travel far to find inspiration.
Editor’s Note: I’ve been on vacation, y’all, so here’s one from the archives – August 2014 – that seems both timely and timeless. Here’s to the AC in your life! – Margaret
Life as an independent publisher has many rewards, but they're not always monetary. When both adults in a household toil in that noble field for a living, much of that household is likely to be held together with duct tape. The situation can be humbling, but it can also be an exhilarating test of your resourcefulness!

Recently a gardening friend adopted a new golden retriever puppy. Adorable as this sweet thing is, she is a digger and has already torn up several formerly lovely garden beds. She is fast; turn your back for a minute and she creates horticultural havoc, smiling as only golden retrievers can and wagging her tiny tail.
I'm not going to waste any space this week rambling on about why we should all eat more salads. We already know why, don't we? Have a happy and healthy August!
Grilled Steak Salad with Peaches and Blueberries
I rarely peel peaches. The skin is perfectly safe to eat. Be sure to wash the peaches just like you would wash an apple or pear before consuming.
Time was when the words to a country song entitled “Get Along” might be followed by “little dogie,” sung by the likes of Tex Ritter or Sons of the Pioneers, romanticizing cowboys of the Old West. Now Kenney Chesney, with more than 30 million albums sold worldwide under his belt, has broached a very different and timely subject in his recent release of that title.
