The friendship of Pat Conroy and Bernie Schein is near legendary in these parts. Not only does Bernie show up as a character in most of Pat’s books, but anybody who ever saw the two together will attest to the depth of their devotion. It was a real love match, albeit complicated.
In fact, says Bernie, it was a bona fide “bromance,” complete with petty resentments, mutual betrayals, a devastating breakup, and a joyful reconciliation.

This was supposed to be a Tex-Mex column. And, for the most part it is. The two featured recipes are beef nachos and a yummy pineapple salad with corn and black beans. Vince and I had some friends over for an impromptu Sunday night dinner a couple of weeks ago and this is what we served. I'll bet I make nachos at least once a month.

The Pat Conroy Literary Center and NeverMore Books will host Susan Cushman, author of the newly released short story collection Friends of the Library, for a book discussion on Tuesday, September 17, at 5:00 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event will be held at NeverMore Books (702 Craven St., Beaufort) and followed by a book signing.

As the days shorten and night temperatures begin to cool down a little, we can venture outdoors and get the fall garden work done. There are lots of things to plant in flower beds and vegetable garden and the sooner the better for those veggies.

I am in a very awkward, situation and don’t know how to get out of it.
I have a live-in all around tradesman whom I inherited. He came with the house and can’t be denied shelter here. He has a very nice little private entrance apartment attached to the house, which belongs to me.
