I’ve been an “outsider” since last August, listening to the locals echo “Water Festival” in all its glory since I moved to Beaufort about a year ago. Man, it’s the best time of the year… Just wait ‘til Water Festival…The sandbar is crazy! etc… Well the notorious Beaufort holiday has come and gone—live music was danced to, new friends were made, old friends embraced, and sandbar debauchery had. By the time Water Festival was over, in a way I would have never anticipated a year ago, I had a newfound understanding of sandbar summers and southern nights.
The Photography Club of Beaufort will have Bluffton photographer Marge Agin as their guest speaker for their August meeting. Marge's program is “Out of the Box in Photoshop.” She will show how to enhance average or even exceptional photos using Photoshop techniques. 
August makes me grumpy. It always has. Not only are we knee deep in swampy, soupy summer now, but we know what’s coming – September… with all its false promise. We never learn, do we? Every year, we look to September with renewed energy and hope in our hearts (back-to-school! first-day-of-fall!), only to have that hope crushed out – mercilessly – by a month even hotter and more oppressive than August.
Great news for fans of literature in the Lowcountry! The inaugural Short Story America Festival and Conference is scheduled for September 21-23, 2012 right here in historic Beaufort.
Keep it fresh! Good salads are only made with good ingredients and freshness is all-important when it comes to purchasing salad greens. Let your eyes guide you. Fresh greens look fresh. They won't have any leaves tinged with brown nor will they be wilted or slimy.
Society could learn a lot from the practice of yoga. Yoga philosophy emphasizes non-judgment, acceptance, and compassion at its very core. Take the recent comments by Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathie regarding his company’s support of the traditional family unit. Though his initial comments were not inflammatory, his clarifications were.
Jan Nordby Gretlund will give a talk called “Clyde Edgerton’s Grandmas and Mummies: Age and Aging in the Carolinas” on Tuesday, August 7th at 4 pm at the Beaufort branch of the Beaufort County Library.
Lately (or perhaps always?) the news has been filled with heinous people doing heinous things: Sandusky, Holmes, among others. The comments under the news feeds spew outrage, fear, horror and are riddled with terms like “evil,” “sick,” “madman,” and “crazy.” I have two questions: How DO we judge these shocking people? And how do we keep up with the reality of our world without becoming totally overwhelmed and embittered? 
I have a new boyfriend whom I really like. He is smart, successful, kind, and very good looking. The only problem is that his dental hygiene leaves a lot to be desired. He doesn’t have bad breath, but his teeth are covered with tarter and look dirty. What can I do? He is really wonderful in every other way. It creeps me out and affects my feelings about kissing him.
