Four locals eager for hunting season reveal the differences among deer hunters.
One hunts deer with a bow and arrow high in the camouflage of a tree. One is a sheriff deputy and taxidermist who hunts by rifle with his three daughters. One hunts in fellowship as the president of a hunting club. One is a local good ‘ol boy who hunts a country road by foot with a keen eye and lives off his land. These huntsmen may have different styles, but all of them cultivated a devout passion for hunting as young boys. All of them have been waiting for August 15, the first day of hunting season, in great anticipation.
Owner of Dancing Dogs Yoga (and Lowcountry Weekly columnist) becomes a Certified Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga Instructor
When I first met Shelly Lowther in 2010, she was opening her first yoga studio in the Lowcountry in Beaufort Town Center. I was intrigued from the moment I met her. She exudes all things feminine… grace, poise, gentleness and beauty. And when it’s time to talk business, she’s all business. Her confidence is admirable, and her success story is one that every little girl needs to hear.
The English eccentric, gambler and former clergyman, Charles Caleb Colton (1780-1832) once famously observed that, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” Shortly after the folks at Moondoggies came up with the idea of Burger Night some years back it seemed like Burger-themed evenings suddenly became ubiquitous.
I’ve been writing a lot, lately, about the ways that social media tends to emphasize, and maybe even enhance, our various divisions – be they social, political, religious, or what have you. I have a friend who calls it the “Facebook Effect,” this unfortunate phenomenon that emboldens people to say things online that they would never, ever say – in language they would never, ever use – in person, face to face.

Just beyond the glass storefront the late summer downpour drowns the parking lot, discouraging all but the most intrepid or determined shopper. I’m hanging out with the man who’s been cutting my steaks since we landed in Beaufort, Julian Johnson.
A southern lit fan meets one of his heroes, thanks to USCB’s Lunch with Author Series.
It was my wife who alerted me to the press release regarding author Ron Rash’s visit to Hilton Head as part of USCB’s “Lunch With Author” series. It was an early birthday gift that she even told me about it, much less that she agreed to go with me.
When the Lowcountry heat and humidity set in, I crave foods that are sweet and cold. And when it comes to frozen desserts only one thing comes to mind – ice cream! You may not know this, but ice cream has been around way longer than electricity.
I have been following with interest your responses to questions about the etiquette of the r.s.v.p., but nobody seems to be paying attention. I am so very tired of extending invitations to which people simply do not respond!
