Volunteering for a Cause

Editor's Note: This summer, Lowcountry Habitat for Humanity's Restore will celebrate 10 years in operation as the Beaufort area's "store that builds houses." LowCountry Habitat, the northern Beaufort County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, was founded here in 1990. The local ReStore started officially in 2004. To celebrate this 10th anniversary, the ReStore will hold an "Upcycled Art Auction" Saturday, August 23, at the Shed, 809 Paris Avenue in Port Royal. This is the site of the ReStore's former location. As a run-up to this event, Lowcountry Weekly will feature four articles (one per month) about different aspects of the ReStore. This second article is about the volunteers and the many varied jobs they do to help keep the ReStore running smoothly.

The Photography Club of Beaufort recently announced the winners of its Spring Competition. Judging the event were award winning photographers Bob Ovelman and Robert Rommell, from Hilton Head, and ARTworks gallery curator, Deanna Bowdish. Prints were judged using the criteria of superb technical quality, composition and interest. During the competition, judges shared their expertise and offered constructive critiques to photos to help the photographers improve their skills.

The Society of Bluffton Artists presents "In the Eye of the Beholder," a collection of captivating photographs by Edith Wood, from June 2 through July 5 at the SOBA Gallery.

The Beaufort Garden Club's Annual Garden-a-Day tour ushers in June.

From June 2nd to June 6th, stroll through lovely gardens at the annual Garden-a-Day tour sponsored by the Beaufort Garden Club. This marks the 20th anniversary of this no-charge garden tour. To help with the event, area Master Gardeners act as docents in the gardens each day.
