“Space, the final frontier.”

It’s been half a century since Capt. James T. Kirk’s first words introduced the world to Star Trek. The Starship Enterprise continues to explore strange new worlds and captivate the imagination of a new generation. But even before the Enterprise began its fictional exploration of uncharted outer space, an ambitious young marine scientist had already embarked on a mission to lift the veil of Earth’s inner space.

Lately, producing this column feels like squeezing that last bit of dry, crusty toothpaste from the tube you should have thrown out a week ago. There’s nothing much left in there, but you’re too lazy to shop and teeth must be brushed.

When the camera rolls on the feature film Basement Bob this fall in Beaufort one lucky dog will indeed have its day. A recent Sunday in Port Royal lent credence to the old adage as nearly 200 dogs “auditioned” for a key part in the movie.
