Aki Kato to Create Mural for Pat Conroy Literary Center
Art
Beaufort artist Aki Kato has been invited by the Pat Conroy Literary Center Board of Directors to paint a Lowcountry mural on a free-standing screen for display in the temporary home of the Literary Center at 308 Charles Street.
The inaugural Pat Conroy Literary Festival is finally upon us, bringing literary stars to Beaufort from all over the South for an exciting series of workshops, presentations, performances, panel discussions, film screenings, and social events centering around the USCB Center for the Arts.
“The Truthful Story is a wonder. Like the Lowcountry river that nurtures and sustains young Genevieve Donovan—and takes the life of her beloved Nannie—this debut novel runs deep and even dark. But the light shines in the darkness, and Helen Stine’s gentle humor, uncanny insight, and quiet wisdom shine through every page of this book, carried along on a stream of luminous prose. The 1960s South she recreates is one born of rapturous memory, painful reflection, an artist’s imagination, and love. Most significantly, Stine gives us the great gift of Genny Donovan, a character who set up residence in my heart the same way Jean Louise Finch did so many years ago. I have a feeling that, like Scout, she will live there forever.”
The Pat Conroy Literary Center is finally ready to open its doors to the public. The Center will hold Open House hours Friday, October 21 – through Sunday, October 23, during the Pat Conroy Literary Festival, and also the following weekend, during the HBF Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens.
“Art in the Life of Joan” is the title of well-known artist Joan Templer’s featured exhibit at the Beaufort Art Association (BAA).
