Beaufort Theatre Company brings ‘Mamma Mia!’ to the USCB stage... and not a moment too soon.
By Margaret Evans, Editor
It was First Friday in downtown Beaufort, and the cast of Mamma Mia! were flash-mobbing to “Dancing Queen” in front of the big clock on Bay Street. All around them, folks were waving phones in the air, shooting pics and video, and singing along – huge, goofy smiles plastered across every face, including mine. Just an hour earlier, I’d been hunch-necked and glued to Mike’s Weather Page on Facebook, obsessively tracking Hurricane Florence, my gut a pit of anxiety. Now here I was dancing . . . jiving . . . having the time of life.
Some call it a guilty pleasure. I just call it a pleasure. If loving ABBA is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
I watched something a few weeks ago that strangely ended up being a life saver during a bittersweet summer. I want to pass it along now as a flotation device, of sorts, in case anyone else needs it to keep their head above water while drowning in copious amounts of tears.
My advance copy of Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy had been languishing on my bedside table for weeks. I couldn’t bring myself to pick it up.
There were reasons for my reticence. For one, my beloved friend, mentor, and sometime-employer had been gone for almost two and ½ years now, and I was loath to rekindle the grief that had been such a long time leaving.
Another school year has begun, and for me, it’s the end of an era. Our only child is a senior at Beaufort High (what?!), so this is my last official back-to-school column. My grand finale. My School Mom swan song.
Editor’s Note: I’ve been on vacation, y’all, so here’s one from the archives – August 2014 – that seems both timely and timeless. Here’s to the AC in your life! – Margaret
Life as an independent publisher has many rewards, but they're not always monetary. When both adults in a household toil in that noble field for a living, much of that household is likely to be held together with duct tape. The situation can be humbling, but it can also be an exhilarating test of your resourcefulness!
