It’s stream-of-consciousness time, folks. That’s what happens on this page when the world is spinning too fast – when reality spirals beyond my ability to comprehend it, much less comment on it with any coherence.
“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold,” wrote Yeats back in the day. I swear that guy was a prophet.
Sleepless in Seattle is one of my favorite rom/com movies, ever. And my favorite quote comes from Rosie O'Donnell's caustic, yet lovable character, Becky. After reading a letter she and Meg Ryan's Annie, assumed came from Mr. Sleepless himself (instead of his eight-year-old son), she reminds us “verbal ability is a highly overrated thing in a guy, and it’s our pathetic need for it that gets us into to so much trouble in the first place.” Amen, Becky. Amen and God Bless, Nora Ephron, actually.
Our little film festival is growing up so fast, y’all.
I remember when it was just a gleam in (executive director) Ron Tucker’s eye. Sniff, sniff. . . Where’s my hankie?
Seriously, I get emotional on this subject. Truth is, the Beaufort International Film Festival’s not so little anymore. It’s not so young, either. Our boy BIFF turns ten this week, and as Ron always says – and it’s never a lie – “this year will be bigger and better than ever.” The first festival a decade ago drew about 500 people to screenings over three days. This year, they’re expecting 10,000.
Last issue, I dabbled in nostalgia. This issue, I aim to wallow in it. It’s been that kind of month.
2016 got off to a rotten start, don’t you think? Not only did January finally bring cold weather – something I really have no truck with after Christmas – but our beloved cultural icons started dropping like flies.
