Water bugs of the Lowcountry, your beloved’s kidney is failing. In the words of Captain Jacques Cousteau: “The sea, the great unifier, is man’s only hope. Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: We are all in the same boat.” This World Ocean Day, man finds himself in a boat siphoning down an eddy of dystrophy.
During the milder weather of spring, pastels shine in Lowcountry gardens. They almost glow against fresh, new green leaves. However, as the heat of summer bears down upon us, the pastels tend to fade out. By noontime, when the sun is high, they can almost look bleached. That is the time when the bright, hot colors like reds and oranges really pop. They also bring a tropical look that melds well with our palmetto dotted, moss-draped landscape.
In life, as in health and fitness, we are inundated with information, trends and fads telling us what’s good for us. Some are – for lack of a better phrase – blatant lies. But how do we sift through the masses of data to decipher what really is the truth? This is a tricky topic, especially since it seems that the lies are based on some form of the truth.
The first time I read the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, I was struck by the similarity of the sutras and the Beatitudes. As the nuns taught me growing up, the eight Beatitudes of Jesus provide a way of life that promises salvation, but also provide peace and help us to survive the trials and tribulations we must face here on earth. Each sutra, or thread, contained a shred of wisdom, that if put into action, could bring the practitioner inner peace and happiness.
Health and fitness is a big focus for us – well, at least it should be. At the very least, it’s a topic of conversation and even debate… often among the misinformed. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen marketing gimmicks being hyped up and sold to the unsuspecting masses that are desperate to look like the models in the infomercials; or, how often I’ve walked into gyms and have seen people doing a workout routine they just googled and printed out. At least they get credit for trying, right?
FASHIONGRANNY is back from vacation, getting a puppy, a stay in the hospital, quitting her job, two flat tires at once and… a lot of perusal of the fashion parameter!
