If you can get beyond the two-and-a-half inch high expanse of meticulously maintained lawn; if you can think more widely than St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia; if you can avoid being distracted by that substance still illegal in our state, although beloved by many; then open your mind to the vast family of grasses – especially native ones – suitable for use in the garden and in the landscape.

We all know about hero worship, be it a mentor, parent, athlete, celebrity, or what have you. Do these heroes and heroines deserve a place in our lives? Of course they do, so long as the mantel you place these heroes on isn’t so high it’s humanly impossible to reach them. Mantels have their dangers, but that’s not what I’m here to write about today.

Beaufort Theatre Company brings ‘Mamma Mia!’ to the USCB stage... and not a moment too soon.

It was First Friday in downtown Beaufort, and the cast of Mamma Mia! were flash-mobbing to “Dancing Queen” in front of the big clock on Bay Street. All around them, folks were waving phones in the air, shooting pics and video, and singing along – huge, goofy smiles plastered across every face, including mine. Just an hour earlier, I’d been hunch-necked and glued to Mike’s Weather Page on Facebook, obsessively tracking Hurricane Florence, my gut a pit of anxiety. Now here I was dancing . . . jiving . . . having the time of life.

Some call it a guilty pleasure. I just call it a pleasure. If loving ABBA is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

 Lori Wilson will present “Seduced by the Light,” a collection of fine watercolors and photography in contemporary realism, from October 1-November 4 at the Society of Bluffton Artists gallery in Old Town. An opening reception is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. October 7 at the gallery. These events are free and open to the public.
