“The Apple Pies are a group of artists who enjoy painting together, critiquing each other's work, discussing art ideas, encouraging each other and sharing meals together,” says Marilyn Dizikes, who is known for her abstract and figurative works.
I used to do TV news in Las Vegas (no, really) and around this time each year a meteorologist colleague of mine would hit the air and say something like, “Our forecast: Hot. Dry. Seek shelter or die. Our next forecast will be in October.” He wasn’t far off the mark. Indeed, forecasting the weather in a place like Vegas is a lot like falling off a log most of the time. Here, it’s a bit more complicated – we get to reason with the hurricane season. But the general approach is the same once the heat index approaches that of the hinges to the gates of hell: seek shelter. And as anyone familiar with this column knows, our preferred shelter comes with cocktails and bar snacks.

Fine arts educator to be featured at Red Piano Too’s Annual Summer Art Show.
On August 6th, 2011 the Red Piano Too Art Gallery is hosting its 19th “Annual Summer Art Show” from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This art show is a convergence of the work of over 100 artists and authors from the Lowcountry and other locales. The “Featured Artist” this year is artist, musician and fine arts educator Amiri Geuka Farris, a renowned African-American artist. Amiri’s powerful paintings combine an alluring blend of vivid colors and layered textures that evoke images of Sea Island Gullah culture. His artistic vision introduces us to uplifting moments and insight into his contemporary view of Gullah culture.
Every morning, I watch my dog Oscar greet his day with a long and juicy looking downward facing dog. He stretches his spine, sometimes even breaking into a three-legged dog pose, carefully lengthening each leg before a vigorous shake. Some mornings, this routine is paired with a yawn that only a dog could manage before he bounds off to start his day.
Friday night is Steak Night at our house. We love to invite our closest friends over for a casual evening and then fire up the grill! A juicy rib-eye steak served with mashed potatoes and a fresh green salad is a delicious way to start the weekend! When you’re in the mood for something a notch above your usual steak and baked potato, whip up these delicious and simple steak marinade and mashed potatoes recipes. The tasty marinade comes together in no time and flavors the meat beautifully without overshadowing it. The steaks can be grilled inside or out, or can be quickly seared to medium with a mere two or three minutes per side under the broiler. Add a classic lettuce wedge salad, dressed-up crescent rolls and grilled fresh South Carolina peaches to complete your meal. Enjoy!
The other night, my daughter and I rode bikes down to Pigeon Point Landing, as we often do after supper. It was Amelia’s tenth birthday, and all of nature was celebrating as we took our usual spot on the pier. The sun was a nectarine hanging low on the horizon, squirting juicy pink streaks across an iridescent sky. The wind on the marsh was almost autumnal – whipping the water, stirring the Spanish moss, bathing us in blessed cool. We dangled our feet, waiting for the dolphins to make their nightly appearance, a chorus of cicadas serenading us from the trees. I hugged my daughter to my side, my heart full of wonder and gratitude. Everything was perfect. Except…
When you hear the phrase “vibrant college town,” what image comes to mind? If you are like many people I know, it’s probably not downtown Beaufort and USCB’s Historic Beaufort Campus.
Have you ever heard the story of the man who sat in front of an empty fireplace and said "give me heat" and all of a sudden... nothing happened? That's right, no heat came from the fireplace. Can you believe that? He was so angry, bitter and despondent when the fireplace did not produce what he had asked for. He became jealous and spiteful of those who had fires billowing with red, orange and blue flames that he would curse the families with warm households. What about the man who put in 2 pieces of wood and asked for a bonfire? Ever heard of him?
The Backyard Tourist chills at two new hot spots in downtown Beaufort
We’re a mile from the sun…
It’s hot. It’s screen-door-to-hell hot. It’s so hot that we’ve received unsubstantiated reports of tourists from northern climes spontaneously combusting on beaches, golf courses and in outlet mall parking lots. Even hardboiled Lowcountry natives – fired in the kilns of brutal southern summers – have all but abandoned porch swings, picnic tables, softball fields and sandbars to cower indoors with the shades drawn. Some actually take refuge in a kind of hermetically sealed, climate-controlled hibernation not to be seen again until mid October, or – at the earliest – the inaugural home football game.
