In Beaufort, fall is the giving season… along with all the others.

There is no doubt that the people of the Lowcountry of South Carolina are generous. During the fall, weekends are filled with benefits raising money for a variety of non-profit organizations. There are cocktail parties, wine tastings, read-a-thons, tours, oyster roasts, fashion shows…you name it; volunteers have come up with creative ideas to gather people together and collect money for many deserving organizations.

It’s about 8:20 on a Tuesday morning as I inch my car forward in the drop-off line at my daughter’s school. It’s a long line this morning, and I watch the children emerge from the cars, one by one, with a growing sense of dread. They look like typical fifth graders – fresh faces, tidy school uniforms, clean and scrubbed, hair neatly combed.

I feel sick.

On the Occasion of her 90^th Birthday

I wish I had known Dottie sooner. As she is about to celebrate nine decades on this good earth, I realize that I have not known Dottie long enough.

Break out the bait balls and the cane poles, shrimp baiting season is here!   Shrimp baiting uses a cast net, bait and long poles. The long poles are used to mark a specific location and then bait is thrown into the water near the poles. After several minutes, the cast net is thrown as close to the bait as possible and the shrimp are caught in the net!
