There are times in life when we must revel… not because we’re singing our own praises, but because we are honored and thankful. I am in the midst of one of my proudest achievements, and I want to rejoice. Because, quite frankly, I’ve worked hard to deserve it. Some might say I’m being pretentious, but I know better about myself. I do not have a pompous personality. My disposition is more modest, and I know the difference between being proud and ostentatious. And I want my daughters to understand the distinction as well. Confidence in women is attractive, admirable and necessary.
You can probably guess what I’m itching to write about this week. I’m just dying to get into it. But I know better, so I shall resist. I’ll practice self-control. I will not succumb to pride or pettiness or schadenfreude or any other base human emotions currently on display throughout Facebook Nation. I will “be the change I want to see.”
Beaufort Memorial to host free health-themed party
Do your body good. Join your friends for Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Girls’ Night Out, a women’s wellness fair, only way more entertaining.
The free health-themed party, scheduled for Thursday, October 18 at The Shed in Port Royal, will feature music, games, food and prizes, along with important medical information designed to help women make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
Friends of Hunting Island (FOH) and Hunting Island State Park will sponsor its 4th annual 5K Run/Walk along the park’s beautiful refurbished trails. The Run/Walk will be held on October 13th, starting at 10:00 am. Runners, walkers, and supporters will gather at the park’s Nature Center, the entrance is just short of the Fripp Island Bridge.
Have you ever heard the saying, “We become what we judge?”
When we judge someone, our behaviors begin to mirror what we judge. For example, if you judge someone for a prejudice, you become prejudiced against them. You may have started from a place of moral righteousness (caution! warning!) but you eventually become the very thing you resent.
It's only X number of days until we go to the polls to elect the President for the next 4 years. I plan to vote; I've been voting for 44 years now. I even (gasp!) know for whom I'll cast my ballot. It's bad enough that I get umpteen calls at dinnertime with recordings of famous folk urging me to vote for their favorites, I just don't answer! My issue, however, is that I have friends who are involved in campaigns who, in social situations, at dinner parties etc., pressure me to say how I'll vote, and if I decline to reveal my preference, bend my ear endlessly to persuade me to vote their ticket.
This Halloween season, make plans to take a haunted tour through downtown Beaufort.
Ghostly spirits are expected to take over downtown Beaufort while the Exchange Club hosts its 20th Annual Ghost Tours beginning Friday, October 12, 2012. Sign up now to take a carriage ride or walking tour through Beaufort’s Historic District while listening to haunting tales of the area.
A survivor’s guide to passing through the “stone”age…
It’s a challenge to be cheerful about a dreadful subject but I’m trying to get my arms (small letters) around one lately – kidney stones. For anyone who has ever suffered through them, maybe I can share a relevant perspective here on the (not always so) little troublemakers. For those who have so far escaped the stones from hell, maybe I can help you stay free and clear.
Eggplant is in season and it's quite abundant at all of the farmers' markets. This time of year they're plump and firm and perfect! The eggplant (aka aubergine) is a member of the nightshade family. They're very filling, supply few calories and contain virtually no fat. Their meaty texture makes eggplant a wonderful vegetarian main-dish choice.
Stories of (and Resources for) Veteran Entrepreneurs
Intermission
We are now halfway through the series of how to start a business. We have covered, in depth, making decisions and taking action. Before I move on to the next half of the series I thought I’d explore some specific examples of entrepreneurs.
