When Kathryn Bigelow accepted the Oscar for Best Director at the 82^nd Academy Awards for The Hurt Locker she smashed one hell of a glass ceiling. No woman had ever won in that category. In 81 years.

Remember about a year ago, when everybody was talking about the “gender gap” in Hollywood? No? Well, that’s probably because you live in Beaufort, SC – not Hollywood – and you have a job and a life and such. And possibly because you’re not obsessed with movies, like I am.

Roll out the red carpet! The 11^th annual Beaufort International Film Festival will soon be in full swing with filmmakers, directors, screen writers, movie stars and lots of film-loving fans. Food has always been a key ingredient on the big screen. The recipes this week celebrate filmmaker Julie Dash's critically acclaimed movie, Daughters of the Dust, and feature Gullah-Geechee inspired dishes from our own South Carolina sea islands.

I think y’all know me well enough by now to know I won’t be writing about basketball.

Actually, if I were smart I wouldn’t write about anything at all for a while. I’m so disoriented and discombobulated that any opinion I express might very well change a few hours from now, and almost certainly will have changed by the time you read this.
