For the Lowcountry Wind Symphony’s Winter Concert, Music Director Donald F. Jemella has chosen the themes of ‘Mystery and Mythology.’ These free concerts will be held at 7 pm on Friday, February 1^st, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 70 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort; and on Saturday, February 2^nd, at 4 pm, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 351 Buckwalter Parkway, Bluffton. All are invited to attend.

Beaufort’s own Dr. Marlena Smalls and the Hallelujah Singers will help to kick off Black History Month with a special public performance of their musical storytelling and a celebration of the Lowcountry’s Gullah culture on Thursday, January 31 at 4 pm at Beaufort’s City Hall.

I suspect that the name of the band from Toronto, Sultans of String, was inspired by the famous song “Sultans of Swing” by the British rock group Dire Straits, which hit the top ten charts world-wide in 1979 and celebrates musicians, albeit in London. Ask the Canadian Sultans, when they play on Fripp Island January 27, if I hit the nail on the head.
