My sister's house burned down during Christmas dinner.
I was halfway through my strawberry-pretzel salad when somebody at our party - there were 28 of us, both family and friends - casually commented, "Looks like they're having a smoke problem in the kitchen."
I just turned a gingerbread man upside down and made a reindeer, y'all.
For real.
And not to brag too much or anything, but he had gorgeously delicious Oreo crusted eyes, a shiny, red M&M buttoned nose and a scarf made out of edible snow. It's as if my new spirit animal forever now and will always be Dancer, Prancer, Donner, and Vixen combined with every single Sugar Plum Fairy all caffeinated and lined up in a neat, pixie color-coded row . . . like magic.
Back in May, I put together a "graduation address" of sorts, using random posts from my Facebook timeline, where no opinion is too trivial to go unexpressed. It was so much fun (i.e. so easy), I decided to stitch together a "year in review" using the same method. Behold, a smattering of miscellaneous thoughts that crossed my mind in 2017 - some decidedly less profound than others.
For this week's issue, I considered recycling last year's Christmas column. Just didn't think I had a new one in me. I began perusing the old piece online - to make sure it still held up, wasn't too "2016" - and when I got to the end, I found an editor's note that read, "This column first appeared in Lowcountry Weekly in December of 2014."
I spent the first days of November on a mountaintop in Tennessee at my college reunion. It was a whirling dervish of a weekend - uproarious laughter, nostalgic tears, too much food and wine - and when Sunday morning rolled around, I drove my weary self down the mountain for a short visit with my parents in Alabama.
