A few months ago, I closed a book and immediately posted the following on my Facebook page: “I just finished reading a novel for Story River Books, and I am reeling from its power. I’m not sure of the pub date, but don’t miss your chance to read The Vain Conversation by Anthony Grooms. I’m awestruck. If humanity is ever to evolve, if we are ever to rise to our potential – and that seems like a big “if” sometimes – I believe it won’t be through political squabbling and jousting for power, but through the great, brutal, compassionate vision of artists like this one. Thank God for good books.”
Art League of Hilton Head and RBC Heritage Golf Tournament, presented by Boeing, team up for a once-in-a-lifetime art exhibition. The Art of Golf, Celebrating 50 Years of Golf Champions will feature reproductions of the winner’s portraits from the last fifty years of the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament. This exhibition will be one of many celebrations of RBC Heritage’s golden anniversary, Cheers to 50 Years!
The next show at the Beaufort Art Association (BAA) Gallery will feature the work of ever-popular Lowcountry artist Tricia Gardner. The title of her show is “Coastal Color Unleashed,” and will run from Feb. 25 to April 29. Both visitors and locals alike are immediately drawn to Tricia’s expressive and exciting work. Her last show at the Gallery almost sold out. An artist’s reception will be held at the Gallery at 913 Bay Street in Beaufort on Friday, March 2, from 5 – 7:30 p.m.
12th Annual Beaufort International Film Festival Rolls Out the Red Carpet
By Mark Shaffer
It’s a longstanding tradition that in the final week leading up to the Beaufort International Film Festival I sit down with Ron and Rebecca Tucker, the powerhouse duo behind BIFF, to get the lowdown on how things are shaping up. And every year, regardless of the number of pre-sold tickets or the massive buzz on social media, it’s always the same with Ron.
“No one’s going to show up,” he says. “I’m always afraid no one’s going to come.”
Upstate Filmmakers Bring Electric Jesus to the Beaufort International Film Festival
By Mark Shaffer
The Greenville-base filmmaking team of Emily Reach White and her husband, Chris, made a big first impression at the 2015 Beaufort International Film Festival. Their feature Cinema Purgatorio took home trophies for Best Comedy and Audience Choice. For the 2018 festival the Whites (Chris writes, directs and acts while Emily produces) have an original screenplay in competition. A portion of Chris’ long-gestating passion project will be read along with others at the Screenwriter’s Workshop, Thursday evening, February 22nd. The Whites, however, have a twist or two up their sleeves. I spoke to them by phone about the aftermath of Purgatorio, the economics of making movies in South Carolina, Christian hair bands, plugging “Electric Jesus” into BIFF and a strange encounter with Bill Murray.

Art will be judged by artist Xi Guo. A Signature member of NWS (National Watercolor Society) and NWWS (Northwest Watercolor Society), Xi Guo was born and grew up in Shanghai, China. She earned her BFA in oil painting from Shanghai Normal University and completed her graduate school at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2014, majoring in photography.
Xi started to focus on painting with watercolor about five years ago and became a world-wide, award-winning watercolor artist. Xi won the second place in the Watermedia Showcase Competition and was asked to give a full-page interview by Watercolor Artist Magazine in 2014. In the same year, her painting was included in the art-book âSplash 16, The Best of Watercolor: Exploring Textureâ published by North Light Books.
