Who is Jane Martin? No one really knows. What is known is that Jane Martin is the pen name of an award-winning Kentucky playwright. Though Martin has written numerous plays, including “Talking With…” and was nominated for a Pulitzer, the writer’s true identity is still a mystery.
Eleven actresses from Beaufort and Bluffton, ages 18-80, will offer a glance into the unique lives of very different women when “Talking With…” produced by Misspent Youth Productions and directed by Gail Westerfield, comes to the ARTworks stage in Beaufort, June 11-19. The play earned national attention when it premiered at the 1982 Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville.
BHS drama students take to the stage at Piccolo (and at home)
Last October, the junior-year drama students at Beaufort High School performed, "The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet" for surrounding schools for CAPA donations. During that time their teacher, LaRaine Fess, read an article about a local man named John Bauer who was suffering from stage 4 liver cancer.
“My students decided they would like to donate money to his trust funds for his children so we dedicated an evening performance to him,” says Fess.
“As a teacher, I was moved by their generosity and concern for this man and his young family,” she continues.
So moved, in fact, that Fess applied to perform the show at Piccolo Spoleto as a headliner.
“I felt like my students were demonstrating a professional attitude, and I wanted them to have a professional opportunity. Our Gingerbread Theater is dedicated to children and their families. Our motto is "a family can eat dinner at 5:30 see a show at 6:30 and the kids are in bed by 8."
The theater committee of Piccolo approved Fess’s application. And so it is that the Beaufort High drama students will be performing at the Sottile Theater, 44 George Street, in Charleston June 11,12 @ 6pm and 13th at 3pm. The cost is $8 for children and Seniors and $11 for adults.
But you don’t have to drive to Charleston to see this colorful production, according to Fess. Her company is performing a “kick off show” for the Beaufort community to help raise funds for the Charleston production.
“My Drama II students wanted to help out their classmates so they are performing ‘Jack and the Magic Beans’ too. They will perform first, then we will have a 10 minute intermission and then ‘The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet’ will be next. So the audience will see two shows for the price of one!”
“The Seussification of Romeo & Juliet” (with “Jack & the Magic Beans”) will be performed on Wednesday, June 9th at 6 pm in the Arts Center at Beaufort High. Admission is $7.
On a sad note, John Bauer passed away just as this article was going to press. “He was a wonderful man who has left behind five children,” say Fess. “We are performing this show on the 9th in his honor and our Piccolo tour will be dedicated to him, as well.”
Vantage Point
Art
The Art League exhibits oil paintings by Nancy Mitchell
The Art League of Hilton Head presents Vantage Point – Oil Paintings by Nancy Mitchell. The exhibit opens with a reception on Tuesday June 15 (5 – 7 pm) at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station. Live music will be performed by Hannan Wicklund.
If you were to ask Nancy how she has managed to remain an independent, working artist over the past 20 years, she would say “thanks to my diversity!”
Her prime vocation is oil painting. And she does her oils in loose, fluid brushwork that gives them a fresh and natural look. Her artistic formation is a great mix of academic and practical training. There was traditional study, private lessons at age 11, art classes full-time at a local college at 16, and an associate’s degree from former Strattford College on Hilton Head Island. However, it was the non-traditional apprentice-style education Nancy received from Leon Stacks at Colorworks Gallery that Mitchell feels did most to shape her as an artist.
On studying with artist Martin Ahrens, Nancy says “he’s the voice in my head when it comes to technique and staying loose, I can only hope to pass this knowledge on to my own students.” Mitchell has recently added teaching to her credentials and she lights up when talking about this new path.
A large mural in Savannah, GA inspired Nancy to create a print of Savannah described as a “veritable feast of flora and fauna.” A montage print of Hilton Head and additional marsh scenes, seascapes and animal prints soon followed.
Nancy enjoys the challenge of commission work as well. Trying to create an image from someone else’s imagination is challenging but rewarding. Moreover she paints murals and faux finishes in homes and businesses and creates hand–painted furniture.
Mitchell’s exhibition is partially funded by a grant from the Arts Council of Beaufort County with funds from the City of Beaufort and SC Arts Commission through the NEA. Additional funding is from the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC.
Come enjoy Nancy Mitchell’s artist reception with refreshments and live acoustic guitar entertainment by Hannah Wicklund at the opening. Other Art League artists will also be exhibiting their work at the Gallery. The Art League of Hilton Head Gallery in Pineland Station Mall is open Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. For additional information call the Gallery at 843-681-5060 or visit www.artleaguehhi.org
Beaches, By & Bye
Art
The Society of Bluffton Artists (SoBA) will present “Beaches, By and Bye,” the artwork of Rosemary Hurkamp Meidenbauer. In this exhibit, the artist presents her lifelong love affair with the seashore. In her naïve style, she offers a variety of paintings in which she portrays the beaches where she has found joy while vacationing and the places, real and imagined, past and present, that capture an everlasting summer. The show is fresh and colorful, appealing to a broad range of tastes.
In her acrylic paintings Rosemary takes us from a busy French port to a South American harbor, where the people seem to be living in a timeless world. Next to those images, our own Hilton Head Island is depicted in vibrant color. In a series of paintings inspired by a recent visit to the south of England, Rosemary conveys a sense of nostalgia in the passing of happy times on Cornwall’s coast.
Having grown up in Westchester County and New York City, Rosemary pursued her higher education at Boston University School of management and earned a doctorate in Adult and Higher Education. Before starting a training and consulting company in Washington, D.C. she held a number of education positions including university dean in both Boston and Washington.
Art has always been an avocation and, although primarily self-taught, Rosemary was lucky enough to have had some fine instructors from Boston University, Harvard, and the Ringling School, notably William Jewell and John Bryans. The encouraged her proclivity toward naïve or “folk” art. Now she works in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, producing both naïve and traditional paintings of all sizes. She currently shows in New York City (Contemporary American Folk Art Gallery) and in Virginia (Jarrett-Thor Gallery) as well as locally. Rosemary lives on Hilton Head Island and is an instructor at the Art League Academy.
The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Sunday June 27, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gallery where refreshments will be served. The gallery is located on Boundary Street in old Bluffton and is open Mon. through Sat. from 10-5. Call 843-757-6586 or visit the SoBA web site at www.sobagalleries.com for more information about the organization and participating artists.

Response to Nature
Art
Pam Kessler looks forward to new book, solo exhibit
Botanical Watercolorist P.A. Kessler has two reasons to celebrate: The publication of her new book Response to Nature and the opening of her solo exhibition under the same title on June 5 and running through August 27, 2010 with free entry at the Walter Greer Gallery at the Arts Center on Hilton Head. The solo exhibition continues at ARTworks, in Beaufort, from September 3 - October 12.
Pam’s work pays homage to a long tradition of botanical painting that dates back to the 16th century. Finely detailed illustrations were used to identify medicinal plants and herbs and later to record new species of plants as explorers and scientists made their epic voyages of discovery. Pam’s paintings retain this accuracy of botanical detail, but are infused with her own creative interpretation of each plant’s essence.
Pam’s love of nature began as a young girl. “My father would take me on nature walks near our Michigan home, stopping every few yards to admire and identify plants. He taught me to stop and look carefully at each plant. This ability to really see my subjects is what enables me to capture each detail.”
“I work with intense light and magnification and it can take weeks of eight hour days to complete a painting. Some of the details are so tiny I use a brush containing just three sable hairs.”
“My first love was orchids, but over time I have become fascinated with the textures and patterns of nests and feathers and dragonflies and every day some incredible new detail will catch my eye and call to me.”
She can smile now as she recalls how her professors at university chastised her for her attention to detail. It is precisely this capacity along with her artistic vision that make her one of the most sought after botanical painters in the country today, exhibiting her work in New York, Chicago, Naples and Miami.
Fine art Giclee prints of her paintings and copies of her book will be available at the Exhibition.
