Time and tide have unique ways of creating new perspectives on our lives and life’s journeys, and the routes they take. This is especially true in the life of artist Mel Green, an internationally known abstract artist. Melvin Green was born during the height of the Great Depression to Whitaker and Sarah Green in the Jenkins Community of Beaufort County. Born into a large extended family with limited job opportunities and his love of drawing to pass the time, Mel left the Lowcountry after graduating from Robert Smalls High School and joined the army in 1953.
Four award-winning Beaufort area artists were selected to participate in the 27th Annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit being held May 27 –June 11, 2011. Sandra Baggette, Kathy Crowther, Diane S. Dean, and Mary Grayson Segars will exhibit their work along with 110 South Carolina artists at the Marion Square Park between King and Meeting Streets in Charleston SC. The artists will be in attendance from 10am to 5pm daily to talk about their work. There will be scheduled art demonstrations by various artists in all mediums twice daily at 11am and 2pm.
The Art League of Hilton Head, located in the Walter Greer Gallery of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, presents Abstract Impressions - an Exhibit of Recent Paintings by N. Jack Huddle, opening with an artist reception at the gallery on Thursday, June 2 at 5:00-7:00 p.m. The exhibit continues through July 2. Led by the flamboyant, virtuoso trumpeter, JB Scott, a former musical director of the world famous Dukes of Dixieland, the group also features award winning vocalist Lisa Kelly, well-known for her rich, smooth tone and swinging delivery of lyrics.
Junior Artists of the Lowcountry, an exhibit of artwork by the art students of Nela Beyer, will open with a reception on May 20th from 6 – 8 pm at 314 Charles Street in Beaufort. In addition to several silent auction pieces, all artwork will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Hope Haven/Seewall Child Project. The purpose of the art show is to give young artists the opportunity to display and sell their artwork while raising money for a worthy cause.
