The Beaufort Art Association is proud to feature Cathy Keup, whose exhibit “Shaken, Not Stirred” will run at the BAA Gallery on 913 Bay Street from June 25 through August 4 with an opening reception on Friday, June 29.

The title of Cathy’s exhibit is, of course, a phrase made famous in the James Bond movies, but in Cathy’s work it rather refers to her bold designs, eye-catching images and gutsy splashes of color! It’s an apt title for this exhibit, as evidenced by Cathy’s landscapes and florals that are literally bursting with color and excitement.

Cathy says: “Watercolor fits my personality, “because it is a medium that provides a large degree of freedom, spontaneity and wonderful surprises as the paint flows to ‘the beat of its own drummer’!”

Cathy began painting twelve years ago while recovering from knee surgery that put a temporary halt to her participation in golf, tennis and skiing. She studied with Lee Fritch for a year, then honed her personal technique and style by attending workshops given by renowned watercolorists from around the country. “Two of my most admired artists are Eric Weigardt of Seattle, Washington and Frank Francese of Montrose, Colorado,” she says.

Cathy is a juried member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society and her commissioned paintings hang in numerous homes and business in West Virginia, Illinois, Ohio and South Carolina. Her painting “Beach Dreams” was honored by the Memorial Watermedia Award at the 2008 Beaufort Art Association Spring Show where judge Tom Lynch from Denver, Colorado, spoke of her work as “brilliantly fresh.”

Cathy is a retired R.N. who graduated from West Virginia University. She and her husband, Rick, moved to Fripp Island in 2008 and both enjoy every aspect of their life in the Lowcountry.

The public is invited to view Cathy Keup’s work at the Gallery of the Beaufort Art Association (913 Bay Street) at the opening reception on June 29, from 5:30 – 8 pm, or anytime throughout the month of July.
